I have a ProStart replacement alternator for some recent GM SUV type vehicle. I was told it was a one wire unit, but it has a four pin plug in addition to the output terminal. Is the plug just for indicators or lights, or does this unit actually need an external regulator? Please email me direct if you cna help. Thanks, Wilson Nov 30, 2008 · It will have one heavy gauge wire (10ga or so) and one smaller. The smaller (I believe pin 3) goes to the warning light circuit. The heavier wire (I believe pin 1) goes to the output post on the back of the alternator. As far as eliminating the stock external voltage regulator there's a great article on this at the Dime Quarterly website.

Hey Surfbeetle, did you ever get the wiring scheme figured out for your alternator? I've got the same round plug as you, but with just 3 wires coming out - 2 smaller ones and one larger ~12ga wire. The main bolt-lug has 2 wires coming off, and these look to be larger still, like 10 or maybe even 8ga? One-wire alternators are internally MORE complex than 2/3 wire alternators and therefore less reliable. They have to perform some "magic" with internal voltage-drop or rpm detection; and some days, magic just doesn't work, which is why no manufacturer would ever use a 1-wire alternator. This simple plug-in conversion kit allows the use of a Delco-Remy 10SI or 12SI internally regulated alternator in place of the original "DN" (or Delcotron) series, externally regulated alternator. "SI" series alternators were commonly used on 1975-85 G.M. vehicles (or 1969-86 Corvettes). Connect one heater wire into ignition-switched 12 volts, the other heater wire goes to ground. The heater wires are the often thicker than the signal and ground wires, and are sometimes white. O2 sensor heaters typically are about 18 Watts (1.5 Amps), so use an appropriate wire gauge and fuse.
